We love all the unique features of our Camp-Resort. From its convenient location in Carver, MA, to its fun-filled amenities, there’s so much that makes Jellystone Park™ Cranberry Acres stand out. But what truly makes our park special is its history and namesake—cranberries! Situated right next to private cranberry bogs, our camp-resort offers families a front-row seat to one of New England’s most iconic traditions. Keep reading to learn more about the history of cranberry bogs, why you may see honey bees buzzing around during your stay, and how we’re celebrating this local treasure with our first-ever Cranberry Faire Weekend.
The History of Cranberry Bogs
Cranberries are one of only three native fruits commercially grown in the United States, and Massachusetts has been at the heart of the cranberry industry for centuries. Native Americans were the first to use cranberries for food, medicine, and dyes. By the 1800s, settlers began cultivating cranberries in natural wetlands, eventually transforming these areas into organized cranberry bogs.
Carver, MA, where our park is located, is one of the largest cranberry-growing towns in the country. Today, you can still see these historic bogs filled with bright red berries each fall, a tradition that continues to shape the culture of our community.
Bees, Bogs, and Berries
During late spring and summer, you may notice honey bees buzzing around the park. Don’t worry—they’re just visiting! Honey bees are shipped into our area each year to help pollinate the cranberry bogs. These hardworking little insects play an important role in ensuring a successful harvest, and they won’t bother you if you just let them bee.
The Cranberry Festival Tradition
Every fall, Massachusetts celebrates the cranberry harvest with festivals, fairs, and farm tours. These events are not only fun for families, but also pay homage to the history of cranberry farming in the region. From parades and live music to cranberry-inspired food and crafts, it’s a true celebration of New England’s agricultural roots.
